Party Games for Adults: Dictionary Game

Read this post on your language:

You do not have to be wordsmith to win at Dictionary. You just have to be a good guesser and bluffer.

Materials Needed:

  • Dictionary
  • Paper
  • Pencils, 1 for each player
Play this one of the funniest party games for adults for 45-60 minutes.

How to Play:

1. Distribute paper and pencils.

2. Give the dictionary to Player 1 and ask him or her to find an unusual or not-frequently-used word and read it aloud.

3. If anyone actually knows the true definition, have Player 1 select a new word. (Remind the players that for the game to be fun, everyone must be honest!)

4. Have Player 1 write down a short version of the correct definition on a strip of paper. Tell the rest of the players to create a definition for the same word, making it sounds as real as possible, and to write their definitions on strips of paper.

5. When all the players are finished, have Player 1 collect the papers and read them silently, for practice.

6. Tell Player 1 to shuffle the papers and read the definitions to the group. The rest of the players must try to guess which one is the real definition and write the answer on another sheet of paper.

7. After everyone has chosen an answer, have all the players announce their selections.

8. Finally, tell Player 1 to read the correct definition aloud. Player 1 gets a point for everyone who did not guess the correct answer. And each player who fooled another player into guessing their incorrect answer gets a point.

9. Pass the dictionary to the next player and play again.

Use a Spanish or a French dictionary for added fun.
